Standby hardware fails quietly

The weakness in that posture is not the design. It is that recovery infrastructure is the hardest kind of infrastructure to know the true condition of. It runs at low utilisation, so components are not stressed into revealing faults. It is exercised occasionally rather than continuously. Its monitoring is frequently less mature than production monitoring, because less attention is paid to a system that is not serving users. A failed power supply in a redundant pair, a degrading drive in a replication target, or a dead cache battery can persist for months behind a green dashboard.

The moment of honest assessment is the failover — which is precisely the moment when discovering a fault is most expensive. A properly exercised recovery site finds these problems in advance, which is the entire point of exercising it. Whether finding them is useful depends on whether the component can then be replaced.

Secondary sites run older hardware

Recovery platforms are rarely twins of what they protect. They are built from equipment a generation behind, bought to a tighter budget, or inherited when the primary estate was refreshed. That makes them the part of the estate most likely to have passed OEM end of support, and therefore the part where a failover test finding cannot be closed through the vendor.
