A significant share of Latvian enterprise computing lives in facilities that were not purpose-built for it — older commercial and industrial buildings adapted, sensibly and economically, to hold a server room. Those conversions work well for the equipment they were planned around. They are considerably less accommodating of the hardware that vendors are selling now.

Consolidation is a demand on the facility

The case for a newer generation is usually density: the same work in fewer rack units. That is a genuine benefit and it is also a transfer of the problem. Fewer, denser machines concentrate power draw and heat rejection into a smaller footprint, which requires power distribution, cooling capacity and sometimes structural floor loading that a converted room was never designed to provide.

Cooling binds first, and it binds late

In practice the limit reached first is heat removal, because concentrated load needs airflow or liquid capacity that an adapted room does not have. Power distribution follows, and floor loading occasionally. None of these constraints appears anywhere in a hardware quotation; all of them appear after the equipment has been specified, and resolving them is a construction project rather than an IT purchase.

Which makes the installed generation the economical one

Judged on total cost rather than on specification, equipment matched to what the building can actually deliver — maintained, repaired and extended in place — frequently wins outright against a refresh that triggers a facilities programme costing several times the hardware.
