Server Parts for Kosovo

A young estate has not been tested

Kosovo has one of the youngest populations in Europe and a technology sector built largely in the last decade, which means a great deal of the enterprise hardware in the country is recent and much of it has never suffered a significant failure. That is frequently read as evidence that the infrastructure is sound. It is not evidence of anything yet.

Failure rates are a function of age

Enterprise components fail at a low rate in their first years and at a rising rate afterwards. An estate with no failure history is therefore not a well-built estate as distinct from a poorly built one; it is simply an estate that has not arrived at the part of its life where the question gets asked. The answer comes later, and it comes for everyone.

The exposure is inexperience, not hardware

This is the part worth preparing for, because it is the part that determines how long the first incident lasts. When it happens, nobody on the team has opened that chassis, nobody knows which spare fits which slot, nobody has watched an array rebuild, and nobody has confirmed that the backup restores rather than merely completes. The hardware event itself is usually straightforward. The first-time-ever quality of everything around it is what turns two hours into two days.

Most of it can be rehearsed safely

Pull one of two redundant power supplies and observe what the system actually does. Fail a mirrored drive on purpose and watch the rebuild to completion. Restore a backup somewhere harmless and open the result. None of these risks production and each answers a question that would otherwise be answered during an outage. ICD supplies the matched spares that make the first two possible, across Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM, identified from the serial and warranted for one to three years.

Preparing for a first hardware failure

A team that has never replaced a failed component benefits most from knowing, in advance, which parts are a five-minute swap and which are not, so the first real incident is not also the first time anyone opens a chassis. We set that out with the quotation, and ship by express courier from Cairo with the window agreed per shipment.
