Independence is a physical property, not a contractual one

Most organisations here have done the obvious and sensible things: a generator for power, a second provider for connectivity. On paper that is two independent paths for each utility. On a small island it frequently is not, because independence is determined by physical routing rather than by who sends the invoice, and the physical options are limited.

Where the shared dependency usually hides

Two internet providers can resell capacity arriving over the same submarine landing, so a single cable fault removes both. Backup generation depends on fuel, and fuel arrives by the same port and the same road as everything else, so an extended disruption eventually reaches the generator too. Neither arrangement is misrepresented; the shared element simply sits below the layer anyone contracted for.

Which means planning for one event, not two coinciding

The practical consequence is a different planning assumption. Rather than treating a power failure and a connectivity failure as separate events that would have to coincide, it is more accurate to treat them as one event with two symptoms. During it there is no remote support, no delivery, and no external assistance available — only what is already physically in the building and whoever is there.

The components that need no outside help

A matching power supply, a drive for the live volumes, and the array controller battery. Each allows a person on site to complete a repair without any external dependency, which is the only kind of repair available during a correlated outage. ICD supplies these across Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM including for long-retired generations, identified by serial, tested, and warranted for one to three years.

When power and connectivity fail together

A correlated failure of power and connectivity leaves an operation with only what is inside the building, which is a strong argument for the component that lets a local repair finish without outside help. We identify it from the serial and dispatch by express courier out of Cairo, with the window confirmed per shipment.
