Two environmental facts that change the hardware question

Most guidance on running server infrastructure is written for a temperate room near sea level. Chile offers neither. A significant share of the country's industrial computing sits at elevation, and all of it sits on one of the most seismically active margins on earth. Both facts change which components fail and how quickly, and neither appears in a standard lifecycle policy.

Cooling gets harder as you go up

Air density falls with altitude, so a fan moving a given volume of air removes less heat than the same fan at sea level. Manufacturers account for this by derating the maximum operating temperature of equipment above certain elevations. The practical effect is that a chassis which would be comfortable in a coastal facility can be running much closer to its thermal margin at a mine site, with no alarm and no obvious symptom until a power supply or a densely packed drive gives out earlier than its rated life suggests.

Vibration is the other clock

Seismic activity is the dramatic version, but the persistent version matters more: sustained low-level vibration from plant and machinery, transmitted through racking into the equipment. Spinning drives are the most sensitive component in a server to that, and the failures it produces look like ordinary drive failures rather than an environmental problem, which is why the underlying cause frequently goes unaddressed for years.

Remote sites run older equipment

Both effects land hardest where they are least convenient. Industrial and mining infrastructure is cascaded outward from the corporate estate rather than bought new, so the sites with the harshest environment run the oldest hardware, typically a generation or two past OEM end of support.
