The constraint is who will hold the screwdriver

For an estate on Barbados the difficult part of a hardware failure is rarely working out what has broken. Diagnosis can be done remotely by someone who knows the platform well. The constraint is physical: the replacement has to be fitted by a person who is actually on the island, and that person is frequently competent but not a specialist in that particular hardware.

Which divides components into two groups

Manufacturers already made this distinction, and it is worth using. Hot-swap drives, redundant power supplies, fan modules and transceivers are designed to be replaced by non-specialists: front-accessible, mechanically keyed so they cannot be inserted the wrong way, and exchangeable while the system runs. Processors, heatsinks, system boards and backplanes are not. They require opening the chassis, working around other components, and knowing what should not be touched.

The first group is also most of what fails

This is the useful part. The components that a non-specialist can safely replace are also, by a wide margin, the ones that actually fail — drives above all, then power supplies, fans and optics. An estate that holds those four categories on site can recover from the large majority of hardware events without a specialist present, which is a much stronger position than it first appears.
