Import & Compliance

Malawi’s ICT regulator is the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA, macra.mw). Under the Communications (Electronic Equipment) (Type Approval) Regulations 2023, with implementation from December 2024, MACRA requires Type Approval for radio-frequency-emitting and wireless-enabled equipment. Passive server hardware with no RF or wireless capability is not confirmed to require MACRA type approval; however, any server component with embedded Wi-Fi or cellular capability (such as a wireless iDRAC module or a Wi-Fi NIC) does require it. Customs is administered by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA, mra.mw) on a CIF basis.
