Rack units are not left empty. Utilisation targets that would be considered aggressive elsewhere are simply the baseline, because the alternative is paying premium rates for air.

Hardware worked that hard fails differently

A server running at sustained high utilisation in a densely packed rack does not age like one in a half-empty cabinet. Power supplies operate closer to their rated output for longer. Fan modules run at higher duty and wear accordingly. Drives sit in warmer enclosures with less airflow margin. The failure profile shifts toward the thermal and mechanical components, and it shifts earlier than the datasheet suggests.

Replacement is not the obvious answer

The instinct when an estate is under thermal pressure is to refresh it. But newer, denser hardware in the same footprint frequently makes the thermal problem worse rather than better, and the capital cost lands against a space constraint that has not changed. The more useful intervention is usually to keep the existing estate healthy — replacing the components that degrade under load before they fail, rather than replacing the platform they sit in.
