Frequently Asked Questions
Lenovo backplane, cabling and drive enumeration questions for operators in Hong Kong.
Physical Cabling Decides How Disks Are Numbered
On a Lenovo chassis using a SAS expander backplane, the sequence in which the internal harness is connected determines how drive slots are enumerated. This is not a setting and it is not stored anywhere you would look. It is a consequence of which connector went where, and it is established by whoever last worked inside the chassis — frequently years ago, without a note.
The Array Survives and the Documentation Does Not
After a backplane or harness replacement the array normally reassembles without complaint, because RAID metadata identifies member disks by their own identity rather than by position. That success is what hides the problem. The disks are all present and the volume is online, while the mapping between physical bays and logical drives has quietly changed. Every document, label and monitoring location that refers to a bay number is now describing a different disk.
How this becomes data loss
The failure sequence is short and entirely predictable. A drive fails. Monitoring reports a slot. An engineer attends and removes the disk in that bay. If enumeration changed and the paperwork did not, the disk removed is healthy and the array is already degraded, so a single-drive failure becomes a double failure and the volume is gone. Nothing in that sequence involves a mistake by the engineer; they followed correct documentation that had silently stopped being true.
The precaution costs one photograph
Photograph the internal cabling before disturbing it, and record the slot-to-serial mapping from the controller while the machine is still healthy. Reconnect the replacement to match the photograph. Where the mapping has already changed, rebuild the documentation from the controller rather than assuming the original layout, and verify by identifying one known disk before trusting the rest.
What ICD Supplies for Lenovo Estates in Hong Kong
Backplanes and expander boards, internal SAS harnesses supplied as a matched set with the board, ThinkSystem and System x chassis components, ECC memory seated to the documented layout, and hot-swap power supplies for chassis the authorised channel no longer lists. We ask for a photograph of the existing cabling before dispatch. Hong Kong is named in the published Asia band, so parts move on a 4 to 7 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each part is tested and recorded against its own serial, warranted one to three years.
