Two Controllers Are Not Automatically a Pair

An MSA array achieves redundancy by running two controllers as a matched pair, and matched includes firmware. When one fails and a replacement is fitted from stock, the replacement arrives at whatever level it last ran. If that does not correspond to the surviving controller, the two do not form a working pair, and the array continues in a single-controller state with two controllers physically installed.

Redundancy You Can See and Do Not Have

This is the failure mode worth understanding, because everything looks repaired. The array serves data. Both modules are present and powered. A quick glance at a management panel shows two controllers rather than one. What is missing is the state in which the second can take over from the first, and nothing about the physical installation reveals that. Why the discovery is usually too late

An unpaired controller costs nothing until it is needed. The array performs, the backups run, and the monitoring is either silent or reporting a state nobody reads as critical. Levelling firmware on a live array

The resolution is normally to bring the controllers to a common level, and on a production array that is a planned change rather than an immediate one. The supported upgrade path is not always a single step; moving across several levels can require intermediate stages, each of which is a deliberate action on hardware currently serving data. This is why the level is worth establishing before a part ships rather than after it arrives.
