The Permission Lives on the Fabric, Not on Either End

In a SAN, which server may reach which storage is decided by zoning configured on the fabric switches. Neither the server nor the storage array holds that decision. This is a sound design and a frequent source of confusion during maintenance, because the component that stops working is not the component that was changed, and the configuration that needs attention belongs to neither of them.

A Replacement Adapter Is a Different Device

Fibre channel adapters are identified by a unique name burned into the hardware. Replace the card and the identity changes, even though the server, the cable, the switch port and the storage are all untouched. The fabric sees an unrecognised device requesting access to storage and refuses it, exactly as configured. The engineer sees a correctly fitted card and a host that has lost its disks, and reasonably suspects the part.

Two configurations, often two teams

Restoring access usually requires both the fabric zoning and the array host mapping to be updated with the new identity. In a Hong Kong enterprise those are frequently owned by different groups with different change processes. The hardware work takes twenty minutes and the configuration work takes as long as the slower of two approval paths, which is why this is worth raising before an engineer attends rather than while a host is down.

The direction that catches experienced teams

Zoning references storage ports as well as host adapters. Replacing a storage controller or an interface module can therefore present a new identity on the storage side and remove access for every host that was zoned to the old one. A single planned part swap becomes a multi-host incident, and because each affected server looks like an independent failure the pattern takes time to recognise.
