Specifying for a platform that may not stay put

Most infrastructure guidance assumes a fixed address. It optimises for density, for tuning to a particular room, and for the efficiency that comes from committing to one facility. Where an organisation has to keep open the possibility of relocating at short notice — and many operating in Afghanistan do — that set of assumptions produces exactly the wrong estate.

What ties a platform to a building

Rarely one big thing; usually several small ones. Cooling arrangements that work because of that room's particular airflow. Power distribution that assumes that supply and those circuits. Any component unusual enough that no replacement will be obtainable near wherever the estate ends up. Each is individually reasonable and collectively they mean the platform cannot be reconstituted anywhere else without a project.

Standard and several beats optimal and singular

Several standard machines can be moved in stages, kept partly in service through a transition, and rebuilt one at a time in a building with ordinary power and cooling. A single dense platform has to move in one piece, needs a destination able to take its concentrated load, and is entirely out of service for the duration. The consolidated option is cheaper to run and much more expensive to move, and which of those matters more is not a technical question.

What ICD supplies for it

Ordinary, widely used components — drives, power supplies, fans and memory — across Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM, in the generations that are genuinely standard rather than specialised. Each matched to the installed build from its serial, tested, and covered for one to three years, so a rebuild in a different building is a matter of fitting parts rather than of sourcing rarities.

Hardware that can be rebuilt elsewhere

Standard, widely used components are what make a platform rebuildable somewhere else, and unusual ones are what make it stranded. We work to the installed build from the serial so a replacement fits whichever chassis the estate is in by then. Dispatch is by express courier out of Cairo, and the realistic arrival window is agreed per shipment rather than read off a table.
