Server Parts for Serbia

Growth adds capacity; it does not add consistency

Serbia's technology and services sector has expanded quickly, and the infrastructure underneath it grew the way infrastructure grows under that kind of pressure — a server at a time, when the load demanded it, at whatever specification was current and affordable in that quarter. Nothing about that is mismanagement. It is the rational response to needing capacity now. But it produces a rack room that no one ever designed.

The same model name covering different machines

Bought across several years, four servers sharing a model name can differ in processor generation, memory type and speed, storage controller and backplane. All four appear identical in an inventory that records model names, and none of them takes the same spare. This is invisible while everything is running and decisive the moment something is not, which is why it is usually discovered during an incident rather than during planning.

The inventory nobody has time to do

The fix is not complicated, only unrewarded: identify every machine from its serial, record what it actually contains, and buy against that record instead of against the model name. A few days of work converts an estate that can only be repaired by trial and error into one that can be repaired from a list. It is consistently the highest-return piece of infrastructure housekeeping available to an organisation in this position, and consistently the last thing anyone schedules.

How ICD quotes against it

We verify the build from the serial before issuing a number, because on an estate of this kind accepting a model name at face value produces parts that arrive and do not fit. We supply Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM components together, with depth in generations past OEM end of support, tested, serial-verified, and covered by one to three years of warranty.

Quoting against a room that was never specified

We do not ask for a model name and hope it is enough. The build is verified against the serial before a number is issued, which is the only method that survives an estate where the same model name covers four different configurations. Parts dispatch from our Cairo warehouse by express courier, priced in US dollars, with the window confirmed per consignment.
