Most of a server footprint is spent before it is switched on

Danish organisations report on their environmental impact in more detail, and to a more demanding audience, than almost anywhere. The answer is frequently uncomfortable

A substantial proportion of a server total lifetime emissions is embodied — incurred during manufacture, before the machine has done any work at all. Replacing a functioning server therefore does not merely fail to save that cost; it incurs a new one. Extending the service life of existing hardware spreads the emissions already spent across more years of useful output, which is the most straightforward efficiency available to any estate.

The honest version of the comparison

This does not mean refresh is always wrong. Operational energy matters too, and where a new generation is substantially more efficient and the workload is heavy, replacement can win on total footprint. What it does mean is that the comparison has to be made rather than assumed — and a refresh justified on environmental grounds should be able to show utilisation figures and a generational efficiency delta, not just a newer model number.
