FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell PowerEdge processor, heatsink and thermal questions for operators in Thailand.

Yes. Tested PowerEdge and Dell EMC components for generations Dell has retired, quoted against the chassis and its thermal configuration rather than the model alone.
Almost certainly the heatsink. PowerEdge chassis ship with heatsinks rated for a wattage band, and a higher-wattage processor needs the higher-rated variant. Fit the new processor onto the old heatsink and the machine runs, reaches its thermal limit under load, and reduces clock speed to protect itself.
No, because the machine is behaving correctly. Throttling is the protection working as designed, so it is reported as a normal thermal state rather than a fault. The symptom is an upgrade that made performance worse, and it is usually blamed on the software.
Yes, and it is the piece most often left out of the box. The shroud directs airflow across the heatsinks in a specific path; running without it, or with one from a different chassis variant, undoes the cooling design regardless of which heatsink is fitted.
For any change in wattage band, yes: processor, matching heatsink and the correct shroud. We quote them together rather than sending the processor alone and leaving the rest to be discovered.

An Upgrade That Makes the Server Slower

It is a specific and repeatable outcome. A higher-wattage processor goes into a PowerEdge chassis, the machine posts and runs, and sustained performance is worse than it was before the change. Nothing has failed, no error is logged, and the obvious suspects are all software.

The Heatsink Is Rated, Not Universal

PowerEdge chassis are supplied with heatsinks matched to a processor wattage band, and higher-wattage parts require the higher-rated variant. Fitting a new processor to the heatsink that came with the old one leaves the machine thermally under-provisioned: it reaches its limit under load and reduces clock speed to stay within it. The protection is working exactly as intended, which is precisely why nothing reports a problem.

The Shroud Is Part of the Cooling Design

The air shroud is a plastic moulding that looks like packaging and is not. It constrains airflow into a defined path across the heatsinks, and chassis variants use different shrouds. Running without one, or with the wrong one, defeats the cooling design no matter how well the heatsink itself is specified — and it is the component most likely to be left out when a processor is bought on its own.

Quote the Set

For any change in wattage band the correct purchase is processor, matched heatsink and the correct shroud together. ICD quotes them as a set against the installed chassis rather than supplying the processor and leaving the rest to emerge during the maintenance window. Every item tested, serial-verified, and covered for one to three years.
