The Model Name Is Marketing, Not Identity

Ordering a Lenovo part against a model name feels precise and frequently is not. A single ThinkSystem model name can cover several distinct machine types, and those differ in ways that decide whether a component fits — backplane configuration, riser layout, occasionally power distribution. Two machines both correctly described by the same name can require different parts.

The Identifier Is the Machine Type and Model

The real identifier is a four-character machine type with a three-character model, printed on the pull-out label and reported by the management interface. It is what determines fit and it is what the parts catalogue is organised around. Most estates do not record it, because the model name is what appears on the purchase order and in the asset register.

It Bites Hardest on Chassis Internals

Components that attach through a standard interface — memory, processors — are usually safe when specified against the family. Backplanes, risers and anything whose fit depends on the internal geometry of the chassis are not, and a backplane is exactly the sort of part ordered in an emergency with the machine already open.

Record It Once, Use It Every Time

Capturing machine type, model and serial for every machine takes one pass through the estate and removes this entire class of problem permanently. ICD quotes against all three together across ThinkSystem and System x generations past vendor support, because a quotation against a family name is a guess wearing the clothes of a specification. Every part tested and covered for one to three years.
