FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

IBM Power and HMC management questions for operators in Thailand.

Yes, for generations past IBM end of support, quoted against machine type, model and serial.
More urgent than it appears, because it is not only a monitoring tool. On a partitioned Power estate the management console is how partitions are created, resized, activated and recovered. Without a working one the servers keep running exactly as configured and can no longer be changed.
That you can observe the problem and not act on it. Recovering a failed partition, reallocating processor or memory resource, or activating a standby configuration all go through the console. An estate with a dead HMC is frozen in whatever state it was in when the console failed.
The hardware is conventional but the appliance is a matched combination of that hardware and its software level, and the software level is tied to the Power firmware it manages. Replacing it with any available machine does not produce a working console.
Enough to keep the existing appliance alive — its drives and power supply above all — because that is far simpler than reconstructing a console for an out-of-support Power generation.

The Console Is Not a Monitoring Tool

On a partitioned IBM Power estate the Hardware Management Console is the mechanism by which partitions are created, resized, activated and recovered. It is easy to treat it as an observation point because that is how it is used day to day, and the distinction only becomes visible at the moment somebody needs to change something.

A Dead Console Freezes the Estate

The servers do not stop. They continue running precisely the configuration they held, indefinitely and reliably. What is lost is the ability to alter it: no partition can be recovered, no resource reallocated, no standby configuration activated. During an incident that is the worst possible combination — full visibility of the problem and no means of acting on it.

It Is Not Replaceable With Any Server

The underlying hardware is conventional, which invites the assumption that a spare machine would do. It would not. The appliance is a matched combination of that hardware and a software level tied to the Power firmware it manages, and on an out-of-support generation obtaining the correct level is the hard part rather than finding a chassis.

Keeping the One You Have Is the Cheaper Path

By a wide margin the simplest protection is holding the components that keep the existing console alive — its drives and power supply first. ICD supplies those alongside POWER8 and POWER9 system components for generations IBM no longer supports, quoted against machine type, model and serial, tested and covered for one to three years.
