Capacity set by contracts, not by a plan

A great deal of Jamaican enterprise computing sits behind outsourced services — contact centres, back-office processing, shared services for clients abroad. The defining feature of that work is that the capacity requirement is not forecast internally. It is handed to you by a contract award, with a go-live date attached, and it can as easily be withdrawn at renewal. Infrastructure planning built on a three-year trajectory has nothing to attach itself to.

A refresh cycle is the wrong instrument

Replacement cycles assume a known direction of travel. Where the direction is decided elsewhere and announced at short notice, a refresh is both too slow and too committed: procurement and commissioning rarely fit between an award and a start date, and capacity bought for a contract that is not renewed becomes an asset nobody needs. The mismatch is structural rather than a failure of planning.

Expansion is the instrument that fits

What does fit the timescale is growing what is already racked — additional memory, additional drives, another controller, more network capacity. That turns a capacity decision into a parts order, which can be executed in the window a contract award actually allows, and it scales down without stranding anything. The whole approach depends on one thing: the components added have to match what is installed exactly.

Which is where it usually fails

Memory of the right capacity but the wrong rank or speed. Drives that will not join an existing array without a rebuild. A controller at a firmware level the rest of the estate is not at. Each of these is entirely avoidable by specifying against the installed configuration rather than the model name, and each of them otherwise costs a weekend at exactly the moment there is least slack. ICD identifies the build from the serial before quoting, across Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM, and covers what it ships for one to three years.

Adding capacity without buying a refresh

Expanding an existing platform with matched components is the only way to add capacity on a contract timescale, and it depends entirely on the added parts being identical to what is installed. We work that out from the serial rather than the model number, and we ship from our Cairo warehouse by express courier with the window confirmed per consignment.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ordering server parts for delivery to Jamaica.

Yes, and we can hold a quotation open while a contract decision is pending rather than requiring a commitment before you know the outcome. Dispatch is by express courier once you confirm.
Not with a refresh cycle, because a refresh assumes a known trajectory. What works is the ability to expand what is already installed at short notice: more memory, more drives, an additional controller. That converts a capacity decision from a capital project into a parts order, which is the timescale a contract award actually runs on.
You can, and sometimes it is right. But procurement, delivery and commissioning rarely fit inside the window between an award and a go-live date, and if the contract is not renewed the capacity becomes a stranded asset. Expanding existing hardware is faster and it fails more gracefully.
Mismatch. Memory that is the right capacity but the wrong rank or speed, drives that will not join an existing array cleanly, a controller at a different firmware level. Every one of those is avoidable by working from the installed configuration instead of the model name, and every one of them costs a weekend when it is not.
Yes. A platform being expanded rather than replaced is usually one that has been in service for years, which puts it past OEM end of support.
