The failure mode that does not appear in the datasheet

Most of Sri Lanka's commercial computing sits within a few kilometres of the sea, and the atmosphere there behaves differently from the one server hardware is specified against. Air carrying salt and holding high humidity for most of the year attacks metal contact surfaces rather than semiconductors. The result is an estate that ages through its connectors, in a way that no component health report is designed to detect.

Why it presents as an intermittent fault

A contaminated or lightly oxidised contact does not fail cleanly. It raises resistance, which produces a fault that comes and goes, appears under load, and vanishes the moment someone reseats the part. Reseating physically scrapes the contact surface, so the symptom resolves and the cause continues. Teams end up logging a long series of unrelated incidents when what they actually have is one environmental condition affecting every machine in the room at the same rate.

The components that go first

Anything with a mechanical contact or a moving part: memory and expansion card edge connectors, drive and backplane interfaces, power supply contacts, and fan bearings, which take in the same salt-laden air continuously. Spinning drives and power supplies are the pair worth holding physically on site, because each combines a mechanical failure mode with the least tolerance for waiting.
