The supply arrangement has inverted

A great many organisations in Puerto Rico now treat on-site generation as the primary source of power and the utility as the thing that helps when it is available. That is a rational adaptation. It also inverts the assumption behind every piece of equipment in the power path, all of which was specified on the basis that generation and battery would be occasional.

Transitions, not hours, are the unit of wear

Server power supplies, UPS batteries and array controller batteries all degrade by cycle count. Under a stable utility feed those cycles are rare, which is why the published service lives sound generous. Under continuous generation with regular transfers between sources, the same components accumulate cycles at a rate the specification never contemplated, and they reach end of life years earlier than the manual implies.

The UPS is the one that hides it

A unit specified as an occasional bridge and now cycling regularly is doing exactly what it was built to do, just far more often. Battery capacity falls steadily and silently, and nothing in normal operation reveals it, because a UPS that is holding is indistinguishable from a UPS that is nearly exhausted. The discovery happens during the one event it exists to cover.

What to replace early, and what we hold

UPS batteries first, then server power supplies, then array controller batteries — all consumed by transition count rather than the calendar, and all inexpensive against the systems behind them. ICD stocks power supplies and controller batteries across Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM including for generations the vendors retired years ago, where both are difficult to obtain officially. Each matched from the serial, tested, and warranted for one to three years.

Power components under continuous duty

Equipment running behind generation rather than behind a utility consumes its power path faster, and those components are inexpensive relative to what they protect. We match them from the serial and dispatch by express courier out of Cairo, confirming the expected window per shipment.
