Logistics that a courier date cannot describe

A meaningful share of Norwegian industrial computing sits somewhere a van cannot reach: offshore installations, vessels, remote energy and processing sites along a very long coastline. For those, delivery to the mainland is the easy portion of the journey. What follows is a wait for the next scheduled supply run or crew rotation, timed by weather and operational need rather than by anything a logistics provider controls.

Missing a rotation is the real failure mode

This reframes the whole spares question. Onshore, a part that arrives a day late is an irritation. Offshore, a part that misses the rotation waits for the next one, which can be weeks. The cost of being wrong is not measured in shipping time but in rotations missed, and that arithmetic makes holding a comprehensive set of critical components on the installation obviously correct — the one environment where generous spares provisioning needs no justification.

The environment shortens component life

Salt-laden air, continuous vibration from machinery, and cooling constrained by enclosed spaces all shorten the working life of the mechanical and thermal components. Power supplies, fan assemblies and drives carry most of that difference. They are also, conveniently, the components cheapest to hold and easiest to swap by non-specialist hands, which matters when the nearest engineer is a flight away.

Equipment stays longer because changing it is hard

The same logistics that make repair difficult make replacement worse, so remote installations run hardware well past the point an onshore estate would have refreshed.
