Architectures that assume the link

Almost every modern infrastructure pattern moves something off-site: applications to cloud services, management to a remote console, backups to another location, authentication to a central identity provider. Each is a good decision in an environment with dependable connectivity. Where the external link is intermittent, they share a single point of failure, and they all fail at once.

The dependencies that are hardest to spot

Data is the obvious one and the one people plan for. Authentication and licensing are not. A system can hold every byte it needs locally and still refuse to serve a single user because it cannot reach an identity provider, or because a licence check has timed out. Those failures present as application faults, and they are routinely investigated for hours before anyone thinks to check whether the problem is the connection rather than the software.

What keeps working is what is in the building

During a disconnection the operation runs on local storage, local compute and local power, and nothing else. That places more weight on those components than an equivalent estate elsewhere would put on them, because there is no remote fallback to absorb a failure. It also means a hardware fault during a disconnection is the worst combination available: the thing that failed is the thing carrying everything, and nobody outside can help.

Which components that argues for

Drives in the live volumes, the array controller with its battery, and the power supplies. ICD stocks these across Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM, with depth in generations past OEM end of support, each identified from its serial, tested before dispatch, and warranted for one to three years — so that the repair does not itself depend on being able to reach anyone.

Supporting systems that run disconnected

A platform that has to function without its link is a platform whose local storage and local power path carry the whole operation, and those are the components worth holding.
