Advice written for estates that are not this small

Most published guidance on infrastructure resilience assumes a certain number of machines — enough that a failure can be absorbed by shifting work to another node, another cluster member, another site. A great many Montenegrin organisations run three, four or five servers in total. At that scale the advice does not merely become expensive; it becomes structurally inapplicable, because every recommendation asks you to add capacity roughly equal to what you already have.

Repair speed substitutes for redundancy

The honest answer at this scale is that redundancy is bought at the component level rather than the machine level, and the rest is made up with repair speed. If the failed part is physically on site, service is restored in hours by whoever is present. The practical availability that produces is close to what a second machine would have delivered, for a small fraction of the money, and it is the right engineering decision rather than a concession to budget.

Three components cover most of it

For an estate of this size the list is genuinely short: a power supply that matches the chassis, an array controller battery for each controller in service, and a drive matching the live volumes. Those three account for the large majority of failures that would otherwise stop an organisation outright, and together they cost a small fraction of a single additional server.

We will quote a single part without treating it as a nuisance order, and we would rather identify the three components worth holding than encourage a larger purchase that adds nothing.
