The damage is in the transition, not the temperature

Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital in the world, and the instinct is to treat cold as the hazard. For electronics it largely is not — low ambient temperature makes cooling easier and does little harm on its own. What does harm is movement between states: equipment that is cold and then warm, repeatedly, every day, through a swing that in this climate can be very large indeed.

Thermal cycling fatigues the joints

A circuit board, its solder and its components expand and contract at different rates. Each cycle applies a small mechanical stress to every joint between them, and the accumulation over thousands of cycles produces fatigue cracking. The symptom is distinctive and frequently misread: intermittent faults that appear when the machine is cold and vanish once it has warmed, or the reverse, blamed on software for months.

Condensation is the fast version

The slow damage is cycling; the quick damage is moisture. Any cold surface meeting warmer, more humid air collects condensation, and the two situations that produce it are entirely predictable: hardware carried in from outside, and a room allowed to cool overnight then heated in the morning. Powering a board with moisture on it converts a recoverable situation into a destroyed component, and the step that prevents it — letting equipment reach room temperature in its packaging for several hours before opening or powering it — is free. It is skipped most often when a replacement part arrives mid-outage and somebody is in a hurry.
