Acquisition produces an estate nobody chose

A great many Czech organisations have grown by absorbing others, and infrastructure is what arrives with them. The result, in a single rack room, is hardware specified by three or four different companies at three or four different moments, to standards that were never intended to be compatible, maintained afterwards by a team that inherited all of it at once and chose none of it.

The asset register is the least reliable document in the room

This is the practical problem and it is consistently underestimated. Registers are written by organisations that no longer exist, in formats nobody currently maintains, describing configurations that have been modified since. Servers recorded as identical routinely are not: different processor generations, different memory features, different controllers and backplanes behind the same model name. A spares plan built on that documentation orders the wrong parts with complete confidence.

Start from the hardware

The only durable fix is to identify each machine from its serial and record what it actually contains, then buy against that. It is unglamorous work and it pays for itself the first time a controller arrives and drops straight in. ICD works this way by default — we verify the build against the serial before quoting, rather than accepting a model name and hoping the configuration matches.

Multiple vendors, one arrangement

An inherited estate is almost never single-vendor, and reconstructing separate supplier relationships for each brand — several of which belonged to companies that have since been absorbed — is effort with no operational return. ICD covers Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and IBM together, with particular depth in the generations past OEM end of support that inherited hardware tends to be. Tested, serial-verified, one to three years of warranty.
