Redundancy is only as good as the hardware behind it

Vietnamese network and data centre operators plan around a fact most markets do not have to think about: international connectivity depends on a limited set of submarine cable systems, and those systems have a long and well-documented record of faults and extended repair windows. The response has been sensible and consistent — build redundancy, diversify paths, keep capacity in reserve. What that strategy quietly assumes is that the reserve capacity actually works.

Standby and secondary infrastructure fails differently from production infrastructure. It runs light, it is exercised rarely, and its components age on the calendar rather than under load. A power supply in a redundant pair can be dead for months without anyone knowing. A drive in a replication target can be degrading while every dashboard stays green. None of this surfaces until the primary path is lost and the reserve is asked to carry real traffic — which, in a market shaped by cable faults, is not a hypothetical.

Where OEM channels stop

The hardware carrying that reserve capacity is frequently a generation or two behind the primary estate, because that is what reserve capacity usually is: equipment that was good enough to keep rather than good enough to buy again. Once a generation passes OEM end of support, the parts entitlement ends and post-warranty lead times through official channels stretch considerably. ICD exists in that gap. Manufacturing uptime has a different tolerance

Vietnam's industrial and electronics sector runs infrastructure where downtime is measured against production lines rather than against an SLA credit. That changes the calculation on spares: holding a redundant power supply or a spare RAID controller locally is trivially cheap against the cost of a halted shift, and the argument for stocking is stronger than it would be for a purely commercial workload.
