FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Management access, certificates and the Tanzania lane.

Four to six, door-to-door from Cairo. Tanzania is named on our published East Africa card and inland destinations including Arusha run on that lane. Clearance is quoted separately rather than blended into it.
Check the certificate the controller presents. Management controllers hold their own certificate, and those expire. Once expired, modern browsers and tooling will not complete the connection, so the machine becomes unreachable for administration while continuing to serve production without complaint. Nothing has failed. The trust relationship has lapsed.
Because browsers stopped allowing that for many certificate conditions, and management tooling and automation are stricter still. What used to be a warning you accepted is now a refusal. The same controller that was administered comfortably for years becomes unreachable without anything about it changing.
Usually regenerated, if you still have a path in. That is the catch: the usual path in is the interface that is now refusing connections. Where a local console or a supported out-of-band method remains, this is a configuration recovery. Where it does not, it becomes a hardware visit, and on machines in another city that is the expensive outcome.
Establish which machines still have a working path before touching any of them, because that determines whether this is an afternoon of work or a site trip. We supply management and board components where a controller genuinely has to be replaced, and we would rather help you avoid that than sell it.

Lenovo Support in Tanzania After End of Life

There is a particular kind of outage where nothing is down. The server runs, the application serves, the disks are healthy, and no administrator can reach the management controller from anywhere. The machine has become something you can use and cannot administer, which is a worse position than it first appears.

The Controller Holds a Certificate, and Certificates Expire

A baseboard management controller presents a certificate to anything connecting to it. That certificate has a validity period. When it passes, the controller has not failed and its configuration has not changed, but browsers and management tooling will decline to complete the connection. The server keeps doing its job. The route by which you would inspect, reconfigure or recover it is closed.

Clicking through is no longer an option

For years an expired or self-signed certificate produced a warning that an administrator accepted. That tolerance has been withdrawn across browsers, and command-line and automation clients were always stricter. So a controller that was reachable last year is unreachable this year because the client software around it tightened, not because anything on the machine moved.

Why an out-of-support estate meets this together

Certificates generated at commissioning expire on a similar schedule, so a fleet built as one project loses management access as a group rather than one machine at a time. There is also no vendor tooling being run routinely to renew them. The first symptom is often an administrator trying to reach a server during an unrelated incident and discovering the door is shut.

What ICD Supplies for Lenovo Estates in Tanzania

Management and system board components where a controller has to be replaced outright, ThinkSystem and ThinkServer chassis, RAID adapters with the cache their revision expects, drives in the tray the backplane addresses, memory at the populated rank and speed, and supplies matched to their partner. Tanzanian deliveries fall inside the East Africa card we publish, at 4 to 6 days from Cairo door to door. Parts are proven on the bench before dispatch, tracked by serial, and covered for one to three years.
