FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Shutdowns, retained settings and the Tanzania lane.

On a published lane. The East Africa card names Tanzania at four to six days door-to-door from Cairo, so it is a standing figure rather than a per-order estimate. Clearance is quoted apart from it.
Suspect the time-of-day cell on the service processor. That small battery is what preserves clock and certain configuration state while the frame has no power at all. Under normal running it is invisible, because the frame is powered and nothing depends on the cell. A genuine power-down is the first event in years that asks it to do its job, and a cell that died long ago fails at exactly that moment.
Because nothing exercises it. A frame that has run continuously for years has never needed the cell, so its condition is unobserved rather than monitored. The first true test is the shutdown, which is also the worst possible time to discover the answer.
It varies by platform, but expect the clock and settings the service processor holds rather than data on disk. That is enough to matter: a frame that comes up with the wrong time, or without the management configuration it had, turns a two-hour electrical job into a much longer recovery with people waiting.
Capture the service processor configuration before you power down, and treat the cell as a consumable due for replacement rather than a component that has not failed. We supply those cells and the service processor boards alongside them, so the replacement can be done during the same window as the electrical work.

IBM Support in Tanzania After End of Life

The most unwelcome surprise in a planned shutdown is a frame that comes back up as a slightly different machine. The electrical work went correctly, the shutdown was orderly, and the system returns with the wrong time and without configuration the service processor was holding. Two hours of scheduled work becomes an unscheduled recovery, with an audience.

A Cell That Only Matters When the Power Is Genuinely Off

A service processor keeps a clock and certain settings across a complete loss of power, and it does that with a small battery. While the frame is energised the cell is irrelevant; everything it protects is being held by the system itself. That is why a dead cell can sit in a running frame for years with no consequence and no report. Its only job arrives when there is no power at all.

Unobserved is not the same as healthy

A frame with high uptime has never asked this component to do anything, so nothing knows whether it can. The condition is not being monitored because it is not being used. The first real test is the shutdown you planned for other reasons, which makes the discovery both surprising and badly timed.

The cost is in the recovery window, not the part

What is lost is service processor state rather than data, but that is more than enough. A frame returning with an incorrect clock affects logging, scheduling and anything time-sensitive downstream, and a frame returning without its management configuration has to be reconfigured before it is trustworthy. The part itself is inexpensive. The window it extends is not.

What ICD Supplies for IBM Estates in Tanzania

Service processor cells and the boards that carry them for Power generations no longer sold, frames and system boards, Storwize enclosures and canisters with the drives those shelves expect, tape drives, magazines and consumables, memory at the placement the frame was configured for, and supplies matched to their partner. We work to the published East Africa window for Tanzania: 4 to 6 days, Cairo to the door. Each unit is exercised before it leaves, its serial is on file, and cover runs one to three years.
