FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Array transformations, windows and the Tanzania lane.

Four to six days from Cairo. That is the East Africa card on our shipping page, which names Tanzania, and it is the band we hold to for a Tanzanian delivery. Customs clearance is quoted on its own.
Generally not safely, and that is the difficulty. Extending or migrating an array is a transformation: the controller is rewriting the layout of data across a changed set of members. Until it completes, the array exists in an intermediate state that only the controller fully understands. Interrupting it is how people lose the volume outright, so the honest answer is usually that it has to be allowed to finish.
On high-capacity drives it can run for days rather than hours, and it runs slower again if the array is still serving production. What matters for planning is that the duration is a property of capacity and load, not of the size of the change, so adding one disk to a large array is not a small job.
Most other array work. You generally cannot start a second transformation, and a rebuild triggered by a drive failure during the window competes with it. That is the real exposure: a slow reshape on an out-of-support estate with no spare capacity, and a genuine failure arriving before it finishes.
Have the drives on hand before you begin, start it when production load is lowest, and accept the window as days rather than hours. We supply the disks matched to the array being extended and the controller cache the reshape leans on, so the job is not started with a part still in transit.

HPE Support in Tanzania After End of Life

Adding a disk to an existing array sounds like a small change. On a large array carrying real load it is one of the longest-running and least interruptible operations the hardware performs, and teams routinely begin it on a Friday afternoon in the belief that it is an overnight job.

A Reshape Is a Rewrite, Not an Addition

When an array is extended or its layout migrated, the controller is not appending a disk. It is redistributing existing data across a changed member set, block by block, while keeping the volume readable throughout. Until that finishes the array sits in an intermediate layout that only the controller can interpret correctly, which is precisely why it cannot simply be stopped part way.

Duration comes from capacity, not from the size of the change

The work is proportional to how much data has to be moved, so adding a single drive to a large array is not a small operation. High-capacity disks push it from hours into days. Serving production at the same time stretches it further, because the controller yields to real traffic. None of that is a fault; it is the cost of the operation, and it is usually discovered rather than planned for.

The window is where the risk lives

While a transformation runs, other array work is largely unavailable, and a real drive failure arriving mid-reshape lands on an array already in an intermediate state with a controller already fully occupied. On an estate past its support date, where drives are older and spares are thin, that overlap is not a remote possibility. It is the scenario worth planning against.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Tanzania

Drives matched to the array being extended and shipped in the caddy the enclosure addresses, Smart Array controllers with the cache a reshape depends on, ProLiant chassis and boards, MSA shelves and canisters, memory at the populated rank and speed, and supplies matched to their partner. Transit to Tanzania is the published East Africa figure, 4 to 6 days from Cairo. Everything ships tested under load, with its serial recorded and one to three years of warranty behind it.
