FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Airflow, fan behaviour and the Tanzania lane.

It does. Tanzania is named on that card at four to six days door-to-door from Cairo, and Dar es Salaam is served on the same lane. Clearance is quoted separately so the transit figure stays a transit figure.
Look for the slot blank that should have replaced the card. A chassis is designed around a sealed air path, and the controller infers airflow from that design. Take a card out and leave the slot open and air short-circuits through the gap instead of crossing the components that need it. The controller sees sensors that are not falling the way its model predicts and does the only safe thing available, which is to raise fan speed until they do.
Because the controller is working from an assumption that no longer holds, so its correction has no natural stopping point. It increases airflow, the affected sensor still does not respond as modelled, and it increases again. The result is a machine at or near maximum fan speed with unremarkable temperatures, which is exactly the combination that makes people suspect a faulty sensor.
It is one of the most cost-effective parts we ship. It restores the designed air path, drops the acoustic and power penalty immediately, and removes a permanent source of wear on every fan in the chassis. On an estate past its support date these are also the parts most likely to have gone missing, because they get discarded during upgrades.
Every empty slot, every empty drive bay, and whether the internal shroud is seated. All three are part of the same sealed path. Comparing fan speed across otherwise identical servers is the quickest way to find the ones that are compensating for a gap.

Dell Support in Tanzania After End of Life

A PowerEdge running its fans at maximum with entirely normal temperatures is not usually broken. It is usually compensating. Somewhere in the chassis there is a gap the thermal design did not allow for, and the controller is doing the only thing it can do about a picture that does not match its model: move more air.

The Chassis Is a Sealed Air Path, Not a Box With Fans In It

Cooling on a rack server works because air is forced along a defined route, across the components that need it, and out. Blanking plates, drive-bay fillers and the internal shroud are all structural parts of that route. Remove one and air takes the shorter path through the opening. Total airflow may even rise while the airflow reaching the processors and memory falls.

Why the correction has no ceiling

The controller raises fan speed and re-reads its sensors, expecting a particular response. With the air path breached, that response does not arrive, so it raises speed again. There is no point at which its model is satisfied, which is why these machines sit at or near maximum rather than merely elevated. Normal temperatures alongside maximum fans is the signature, and it reads as a sensor fault to almost everybody who meets it.

The gap is created by ordinary maintenance

Nobody removes a blanking plate deliberately. They remove a network card that failed, or a controller that was replaced, or they pull a dead disk and the caddy goes into a drawer. Each of those is correct work. On hardware kept running well past its support date it has happened many times, by different people, over years, and the fillers were never treated as parts because they do nothing electrically.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in Tanzania

Slot blanks, drive-bay fillers, air baffles and internal shrouds for PowerEdge generations no longer sold, fan modules rated for the zone they serve, chassis and system boards, drives in the correct carrier, registered memory at the populated rank and speed, and PERC controllers with the cache their revision expects. The East Africa card on our shipping page carries Tanzania at 4 to 6 days from Cairo, door to door. Each part is tested in a chassis of its own type, logged against its serial number, and carries one to three years of cover.
