FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

IBM multipath and storage redundancy questions for operators in India.

Within the published Asia band of 4 to 7 days door-to-door from Cairo. India is listed on that card, so an Indian data centre address is planned against that window.
You are almost certainly running on one path. Multipath software presents several physical routes to storage as one device, and it is designed to carry on silently when a route disappears. That is the correct behaviour during a failure and an unhelpful one after a repair, because nothing announces that redundancy has not come back.
Because restoring a path is more than fitting the card. The new adapter has a different identity, so fabric zoning and storage host mappings both need updating, and the multipath configuration on the host may need to be told about the new device. Miss any of those and the path stays down while the machine works.
No. The worse part is that you are now single-pathed without knowing it. The redundancy that exists to survive the next failure is gone, so the next adapter, cable or switch port problem takes the storage away entirely rather than being absorbed.
We supply adapters and interfaces as pairs where the design calls for a pair, and we ask for the multipath output before and after so the second route is proven rather than assumed. Parts move on the 4 to 7 day Asia lane, each tested, tied to its serial, and covered one to three years.

Multipath Is Designed Not to Tell You

Multipath software presents several physical routes to the same storage as a single device, and continues serving data when one of those routes fails. That silence is the entire point during a failure: the application does not notice, and nobody is paged at three in the morning for something that has been absorbed. After a planned repair, the same silence means nothing announces that the redundancy has not been restored.

Fitting the Card Is Not Restoring the Path

A replacement adapter presents a different identity to the fabric. Restoring the route therefore means updating the fabric zoning, updating the storage array host mapping, and in many cases telling the host multipath configuration about the new device. Each of those is a separate system, frequently owned by a separate team. Complete the hardware work and miss any one of them, and the server runs correctly on the single surviving path.

Two costs, and the second one is the serious one

The visible cost is throughput, roughly halved where the paths were sharing load, which is usually what makes an Indian operator raise it with us. The cost that matters is that the estate is now single-pathed. The redundancy bought and configured to survive the next component failure is absent, so the next adapter fault, cable problem or switch port failure removes storage access from the host completely.

The verification that takes two minutes

Capture the multipath device listing before the work and again afterwards, and compare the path count. That single comparison distinguishes a completed repair from one that fitted the hardware and left the redundancy down, and it takes a fraction of the time spent later investigating why a machine is slower than it used to be.

What ICD Supplies for IBM Estates in India

Fibre channel adapters supplied in pairs where the design calls for a pair, storage controllers and interfaces on both sides of a redundant route, enclosures and the cabling that provides the second path, Power system components, ECC and CDIMM memory quoted against machine type and serial, and redundant supplies for frames long out of production. We ask for the multipath output before and after. India is in the published Asia band, so parts move on a 4 to 7 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each item is tested, tied to its serial, and covered one to three years.
