FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell array rebuild and exposure questions for operators in India.

Four to seven days door-to-door. India is named in the Asia band on our published shipping page, which is the window we work to for an Indian consignee rather than a figure produced per enquiry.
Usually not. Check the rebuild priority on the controller. It governs how much of the disk subsystem is given to rebuilding versus serving production, and the default on most Dell controllers favours production. On a busy array that can stretch a rebuild from hours into days.
Because it protects the application during a degraded period, which is a reasonable trade when a rebuild takes an hour. On high-capacity drives it is no longer an hour. The same setting that politely yields to production now leaves the array unprotected for days, and nothing about the default changed when the drives got bigger.
A second drive failure during the rebuild window, which on most RAID levels means data loss. The exposure is proportional to how long the rebuild takes, so a setting that triples the rebuild time triples the window in which one more failure ends the array.
During a rebuild, usually yes, accepting that production will be slower while it runs. The point is that this is a decision to take deliberately rather than a default to inherit. We supply the drives on the 4 to 7 day Asia lane; every disk is tested and logged against its serial, with one to three years of warranty.

The Rebuild Is Slow Because It Was Told to Be

Indian operators regularly ask us whether a replacement disk is faulty because an array has been rebuilding for days. The disk is almost always fine. The controller has a rebuild priority setting that decides how much of the disk subsystem goes to rebuilding and how much continues serving the application, and on most Dell controllers the default favours the application.

A Sensible Default That Aged Badly

That default was chosen when a rebuild was measured in hours. Yielding to production for an hour to keep an application responsive is obviously correct. Drive capacities have grown by more than an order of magnitude since; rebuild times grew with them. The setting did not change, so the same polite behaviour now holds an array in a degraded state for days at a time.

The exposure is the whole point

A degraded array is one failure from loss on most RAID levels. The probability of that second failure is a function of how long the window stays open, so anything that lengthens the rebuild multiplies the risk proportionally. An array rebuilding for three days instead of one has spent three times as long in the state everyone was trying to avoid, in exchange for an application that ran slightly faster during it.

The decision worth making in advance

Decide now what the priority should be during a rebuild, and write it down before an outage forces the choice under pressure. For most estates the answer is to accept slower production while the rebuild runs, because the alternative is a longer period during which one more disk ends the volume. What matters is that it is a decision rather than an inherited default nobody has looked at.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in India

Replacement drives held so a degraded array is not additionally waiting on procurement, hot spares that let a rebuild start without anyone attending, PERC controllers and the cache hardware that governs rebuild behaviour, generation-correct carriers, ECC memory, and redundant supplies for fully populated chassis. India is named in the published Asia band, so parts move on a 4 to 7 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Every disk is tested and logged against its own serial, with one to three years of warranty.
