FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cisco topology and spanning-tree questions for operators in India.

The Asia band on our shipping page, 4 to 7 days door-to-door from Cairo, with India named on it. That published figure is what the plan is built on.
The spanning-tree root probably moved. In a switched network one device is elected as the root of the topology, and every path is calculated relative to it. That election is decided by a priority value and, where priorities are equal, by the lowest address. A new switch with a default priority and a low address can win it without anyone intending that.
Every path. Traffic that previously crossed the distribution layer may now traverse an access switch that was never sized for it, and links that were forwarding may block while others take load they were not designed for. The network is fully functional and behaving according to the protocol, and it is carrying traffic along paths nobody chose.
Usually as performance that changed for reasons unrelated to any device people are looking at, since the switch that was replaced is often working perfectly. The quickest check is to ask which device is currently the root and compare it against which device should be, and that comparison is rarely part of a hardware replacement procedure.
Record the intended root and set the priority on the replacement before it joins the network, rather than after. We supply distribution and access platforms, UCS components, uplink modules, matched optics and correctly rated supplies on the 4 to 7 day Asia lane. Each module is checked under load, serial-logged, and covered one to three years.

One Device Defines Every Path

In a switched network, spanning tree elects a single device as the root, and every forwarding path in the topology is calculated relative to it. That election is decided by a configurable priority value, and where priorities are equal, by the lowest hardware address. A newly installed switch carrying a default priority and a low address can therefore win the election simply by being plugged in.

The Network Reconverges Correctly and Wrongly

When the root moves, every path is recalculated. Traffic that used to flow through the distribution layer can find itself crossing an access switch never sized to carry it. Links that were forwarding may block, and links held in standby may take production load. The protocol has done exactly what it is specified to do. The result is a topology nobody designed, chosen by an address rather than by an engineer.

Why it is so hard to attribute

The switch that was replaced is usually working perfectly, so attention goes elsewhere. The symptom is that performance changed across a site around a particular date, with no single device implicated and no error anywhere. Indian operators running multi-building campuses describe this to us as an unexplained slowdown after routine maintenance, and the maintenance is genuine but the causal link runs through the topology rather than the hardware.

Set the priority before it joins

Ask which device is currently the root and confirm it is the one that should be. Set the priority on any replacement explicitly before it is connected, rather than discovering afterwards which way the election went. This is a one-line configuration item that is almost never in a hardware replacement procedure, because the procedure was written around the device and not around the network it is joining.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in India

Distribution and access platforms, uplink modules carrying traffic between layers, UCS server nodes and fabric hardware, transceivers matched to the module and the distance, and supplies rated for the line cards and optics actually fitted. We will ask what the intended root is before quoting a distribution switch. Because India appears on the published Asia card, consignments run a 4 to 7 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each module is checked under load, serial-logged, and covered one to three years.
