FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Lenovo ThinkSystem and IBM System x questions for operators in Vietnam.

In practice, frequently neither. IBM divested the x86 business to Lenovo, so machines badged IBM System x became Lenovo products mid-life. Both vendors will tell you accurately that the platform is out of support, and the estate ends up without a channel rather than without a manufacturer.
Yes, and the System x generations are where most of the demand sits. We identify the machine from its serial rather than from the badge, which is the only reliable approach for transition-era hardware.
Because the ownership change fragmented the documentation and the spares channel at the same moment. Part numbers were reissued, some components exist under two identities, and searching under the wrong one returns nothing at all — which reads as unavailable when it is simply mislabelled.
Frequently yes. An x3650 M5 is a capable two-socket server and a great many are carrying production workloads perfectly well. The reason they get replaced is usually parts anxiety rather than any deficiency in the hardware.
Yes. We quote ThinkSystem and System x together against the actual installed configuration, with the same testing and the same one to three years of cover on each part.

The Estate That Changed Vendor Mid-Life

A great deal of the two-socket hardware running in Vietnamese data centres was bought as IBM System x and became a Lenovo product partway through its service life, when the x86 server business changed hands. The machines did not change. What changed was who was responsible for them, and the answer for an out-of-support generation turns out to be nobody in particular.

Out of Support by Two Vendors at Once

Both vendors give accurate answers. IBM no longer makes the platform; Lenovo confirms the generation is past end of support. Neither statement is wrong and neither helps, and the practical position is worse than for a comparable Dell or HPE machine of the same age — not because the hardware is inferior but because there is no single party who ever considered it theirs.

Part Numbers Fragmented Along With the Ownership

This is the concrete obstacle and it is easy to mistake for scarcity. Components from the transition era can exist under an IBM option number and a Lenovo part number simultaneously, sometimes with the field-replaceable-unit code differing again. A search under one identity returns nothing while stock sits under another, so the component is reported unavailable when it is merely filed elsewhere.

Identify From the Machine, Not the Badge

Working from the serial and the installed configuration resolves it, because the hardware itself is unambiguous about what it contains regardless of which logo is on the bezel. ICD supplies ThinkSystem and System x components across both identities, identifies the required part from the machine rather than the paperwork, tests before dispatch and covers every item for one to three years.
