FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE ProLiant and MSA storage questions for operators in Vietnam.

Yes. We supply ProLiant and MSA components for generations past HPE end of support, shipped from Cairo with the configuration confirmed from the serial before anything ships.
It is usually the largest single exposure in the estate and it is rarely described that way. Server-level redundancy means a failed component affects one machine. A storage controller failure affects every host attached to that array, which on a consolidated estate is most of the business.
It is covered while the second one holds. Running on a single controller is a degraded state with no further protection, and it lasts until a replacement is fitted — so the real question is not whether the array has redundancy but how long it would spend without it.
That is the item nobody checks. It preserves data held in the controller cache when power is lost, gives no operational symptom as it degrades, and then fails to do its job during exactly the event it exists for. The result is data loss rather than downtime.
We confirm the controller revision and firmware level before shipping, because a Smart Array controller introduced into an array at a different level can refuse to import the existing configuration.

Where an HPE Estate Concentrates Its Risk

Server redundancy is well understood and generally well implemented: dual power supplies, mirrored boot, redundant paths. Storage redundancy is implemented too, and then almost never re-examined. On most HPE estates in Vietnam the MSA array is the component with the widest reach and the least attention, because it has worked without incident since it was installed.

A Controller Failure Is Not a Server Failure

The difference is the blast radius. A failed power supply affects one chassis. A failed array controller affects every host attached to that array, which on a consolidated estate means most of the business at once. Two controllers protect against the first failure and nothing else — running on one is a degraded state with no remaining margin, and its duration is set entirely by how quickly a matched replacement can be obtained.

The Cache Battery Fails Silently

The battery on a Smart Array controller holds the write cache intact through a power loss. It degrades on a calendar, reports nothing useful while it does, and then fails during precisely the event it exists to survive. The consequence is not an outage but lost writes, which is considerably worse and much harder to detect afterwards. On an estate old enough to be out of support, the original batteries are old enough to be replaced.

Firmware Is Part of the Specification

A replacement controller at a different firmware level can decline to import an existing array configuration, which turns a planned swap into a recovery exercise. ICD confirms controller revision and firmware level alongside the part number, and supplies MSA and Smart Array components across generations HPE has retired, each tested and warranted for one to three years.
