FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cisco UCS fabric, blade and firmware questions for operators in Vietnam.

Yes. We supply blade, rack and fabric components for UCS generations past Cisco end of support, shipped from Cairo with the configuration confirmed first.
It covers the wrong failure. A blade is not an independent server — it has no local management, no independent network path and no identity of its own without the fabric. Spare blades protect against the failure that matters least, because a blade failing takes out one workload while a fabric failing takes out the chassis.
In a correctly built pair, the surviving interconnect carries the chassis and you continue running with no redundancy at all. That is survivable and it is not stable, because the next failure is unprotected and the duration is set by how quickly a matched interconnect can be obtained.
Cost and the assumption that a pair is sufficient. A pair is sufficient to survive one failure; it is not sufficient to restore redundancy. On an out-of-support generation, where a replacement is not a catalogue order, the gap between those two statements can be weeks.
We confirm the fabric level alongside the part, because UCS couples blade, adapter and fabric firmware tightly and a component introduced at the wrong level may not be accepted into the domain.

A UCS Blade Is Not a Server

This is the single most consequential thing to understand about spares for a Cisco UCS estate, and it is the thing most often got wrong. A blade has no independent management processor reachable on its own, no network path that does not traverse the fabric, and no identity outside the service profile the fabric applies to it. Removed from its domain it is an inert assembly of components.

Which Means Spare Blades Protect the Wrong Thing

Holding a spare blade is sensible and most estates in Vietnam do it. But a blade failure removes one workload from a chassis that keeps running, which is the smallest hardware event UCS can have. A fabric interconnect failure reaches every blade in the domain. The spare that is easy to justify covers the minor case; the component whose failure is serious is the one nobody has.

A Pair Survives One Failure and Restores Nothing

Fabric interconnects are deployed in pairs and that is correct. When one fails the survivor carries the entire chassis, which is exactly what it is there for — and from that moment the domain has no redundancy whatsoever. The system is running and completely exposed, and how long it stays that way depends entirely on the availability of a matched replacement. On a generation Cisco no longer sells, that is not a catalogue order.

Firmware Levels Are Part of the Part

UCS couples blade, adapter and fabric firmware more tightly than most platforms, and a component introduced at the wrong level may be refused by the domain rather than simply underperforming. ICD confirms the fabric level alongside the part number and supplies interconnects, IO modules, VIC adapters and blades for UCS generations past end of support, tested and warranted for one to three years.
