FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Lenovo cooling, fan replacement and thermal shutdown questions for operators in the United Kingdom.

Three to five, door-to-door. Britain is covered by the European band on our published shipping page, and that band is what we plan against for a UK delivery.
Hot-swappable means it can be changed while the machine runs, not that the bay can stay empty. With a fan removed, airflow through that zone collapses, temperatures rise quickly, and the machine protects itself by shutting down. The window is short, sometimes well under a minute on a densely populated chassis.
Because server cooling is engineered with very little margin. Airflow is ducted precisely, and removing one fan does not reduce cooling proportionally; it can create a path of least resistance that lets air bypass the components entirely. The remaining fans spin up and move more air along the wrong route.
Have the replacement physically in hand, remove the failed unit, and seat the new one immediately. Do not remove a fan to inspect it, to check a part number, or while waiting for a replacement to be found. The same applies to blanking panels and baffles: an empty slot changes the airflow path whether or not a fan belongs in it.
We supply fan assemblies ahead of the swap so a replacement is in hand before anything is removed, and we supply the baffles and fillers that keep the airflow path intact. Parts arrive on the 3 to 5 day European lane, tested in a like chassis, serial-logged, with one to three years of cover.

Hot-Swappable Does Not Mean the Bay Can Be Empty

A hot-swap fan can be exchanged without powering the server down. What it cannot do is be absent. With the unit out, airflow through that zone collapses, component temperatures climb within seconds, and the machine shuts itself down to avoid damage. The protection is working correctly; the procedure was wrong. On a densely populated chassis the tolerable window can be well under a minute.

Cooling Does Not Degrade Gracefully

Server airflow is ducted deliberately, with each fan responsible for a defined path. Removing one does not reduce cooling in proportion to the fan count. It can open a route of least resistance, and the remaining fans then move a larger volume of air along the wrong path, cooling the empty bay while the components that needed it get less than before. This is why an apparently modest intervention produces a rapid thermal event.

The three ways UK sites walk into it

Removing a fan to read its part number, so a replacement can be ordered. Removing a suspected fan to see whether the alarm clears. And removing one while somebody goes to find the spare. Each is a reasonable instinct and each leaves the bay empty for exactly the period the machine cannot tolerate.

Blanks and baffles belong to the same rule

Empty drive bays, missing blanking panels and absent air baffles change the airflow path in the same way, with slower and less obvious consequences. A chassis running warm with no failed component at all is frequently a chassis missing fillers that were taken out during some past maintenance and never put back, which makes them worth auditing on any estate that has been serviced many times.

What ICD Supplies for Lenovo Estates in the UK

Hot-swap fan assemblies supplied ahead of the swap so a replacement is in hand before anything is removed, the baffles and blanking components that keep the ducted path intact, ThinkSystem and System x chassis parts, ECC memory matched to the bank being populated, and hot-swap supplies for chassis the channel no longer lists. Our published European card covers Britain at 3 to 5 days door-to-door from Cairo. Each item is tested in a like chassis, serial-logged, with one to three years of cover.
