IBM Support in the UK After End of Life
ICD supplies tested IBM Power and storage components into the United Kingdom inside the published European band, including for arrays that are slow for hours after a power event and then recover on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions
IBM storage cache, battery and performance questions for operators in the United Kingdom.
Write-Back Is a Promise the Controller Must Be Able to Keep
When an array controller acknowledges a write from its cache before the data reaches disk, it is promising to complete that write even if power disappears in the next instant. It can only make that promise while it has enough stored energy to flush the cache, which is what the cache battery or capacitor module is for. Without sufficient charge the controller declines to make the promise and runs in write-through instead.
The Slow Hours After a Power Event Are Correct Behaviour
Following a power cut, the stored energy has been spent. The controller disables write-back and serves every write straight to disk until the module has recharged, which on some platforms takes several hours. British operators report this as an array that was slow after an outage and then recovered by itself, and conclude that something transient went wrong. Nothing went wrong; the array was protecting data at the cost of speed, exactly as designed.
When the recovery does not arrive
The case that matters is the one where performance never comes back. A battery or capacitor at the end of its life cannot reach a safe charge, so the controller stays in write-through permanently. The array is then slow indefinitely, no fault is reported, and every diagnostic passes — because the controller is making exactly the right decision with the hardware it has. This is a consumable that has expired, and it presents as a storage performance problem rather than as a failed part.
The check worth making before buying a controller
Read the cache state and the battery or capacitor health from the controller before concluding that an array needs replacing. An estate past its support date is exactly where these modules have aged out, and the difference between a consumable and a controller is a large difference in cost and in disruption.
What ICD Supplies for IBM Estates in the UK
Cache batteries and capacitor modules, array controllers and their cache hardware, storage enclosures and the components that attach them to a controller, Power system parts, ECC and CDIMM memory verified against the frame inventory, and redundant supplies for frames the channel no longer serves. We will ask for the cache and battery state before quoting a controller. Because Britain appears on the published European card, consignments run a 3 to 5 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each unit is tested, tied to its serial, and covered for one to three years.
