FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Repeat failures, bay faults and the Ghana lane.

Five to seven days from Cairo, door to door, taken from the West Africa card which names Ghana. Clearance is quoted separately so the transit figure stays clean.
Swap the positions before ordering a fourth. If the fault stays with the bay rather than travelling with the unit, the problem is the chassis-side connector or the backplane behind it, not the supply. Three units failing identically in one position is much better evidence of a bad position than of three bad units.
It separates two things that otherwise look identical. Put the suspect unit in a known-good bay and a known-good unit in the suspect bay. If the fault follows the bay, you have your answer in ten minutes and you stop buying parts. It is the cheapest diagnostic available and it is skipped because replacing the obvious component feels faster.
It can, and that is worth knowing before you reuse them. A connector with a damaged or high-resistance contact can stress a unit, so a supply pulled from a bad bay should not be assumed healthy simply because it is new. Test it elsewhere before returning it to stock.
Backplanes, power distribution hardware and the chassis components the bay belongs to, alongside supplies for ThinkSystem generations no longer sold. We would rather ask whether the fault moved than sell you a fourth identical part.

Lenovo Support in Ghana After End of Life

The third identical failure in the same position is not bad luck with components. Three units failing the same way in the same bay is strong evidence about the bay. The reason it takes three is that replacing the visible part is quick, feels decisive, and appears to work each time until it does not.

Some Faults Belong to the Position, Not the Part

A hot-swap bay is a connector, a section of backplane and the power distribution behind it. Any of those can be damaged, contaminated or carrying a high-resistance contact. A unit inserted into that position may read as faulty, may fail to be recognised, or may fail early. Every one of those symptoms is indistinguishable, from the outside, from a defective unit.

The swap test is ten minutes and is routinely skipped

Moving the suspect unit to a known-good position and a known-good unit into the suspect position separates the two possibilities immediately. It is skipped because ordering a replacement is the reflex, and because on a live machine any physical handling feels riskier than a part order. The result is a cycle of replacements, each of which appears to resolve the fault briefly.

Parts pulled from a bad bay should not go straight back to stock

A position with a damaged contact can stress what is fitted into it, so units removed from it are of uncertain condition. Returning them to a spares shelf as good propagates the problem: a unit that was fine on arrival, stressed in a bad bay, and filed as healthy will be fitted somewhere else and fail there, apparently at random.
