FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Controller generations, array metadata and the Ghana lane.

The West Africa card, five to seven days door-to-door from Cairo, with Ghana named on it. That is our published figure and clearance is quoted apart from it.
The metadata generation is very likely different. An array controller writes a description of the array onto the disks, and that description has a format which changes across controller generations. A newer adapter can often read older metadata, but not always, and older adapters generally cannot read newer. The disks are intact; the replacement cannot interpret the map written on them.
Frequently it is, and that is what makes this hard to predict. Compatibility depends on the specific pair of generations rather than on a general rule, and support statements written when both were current may no longer be easy to find. On hardware past its support date the practical answer is to match the generation rather than to hope.
The real risk is a controller that offers to initialise rather than import. Accepting that prompt writes new metadata over the old and the array is gone. Any attempt should be made knowing exactly which option is which, ideally with a backup verified first, because the destructive choice and the safe choice are adjacent on the same screen.
By asking which controller model and generation failed, not just which chassis it was in. We supply matched controllers and the cache and energy modules that generation expects, so the replacement reads what is already on the disks rather than offering to replace it.

HPE Support in Ghana After End of Life

Replacing a failed array controller with a newer model feels like an upgrade taken under duress. Then the new adapter looks at the disks, does not recognise the array, and offers to create one. The data is entirely intact and completely unreachable, and the option that would destroy it is one keystroke away from the option that would not.

The Array Is Described on the Disks, in a Format That Changes

A hardware controller writes metadata onto the member disks describing how the array is assembled. That is what makes the array portable between chassis. The format of that description is a property of the controller generation, and it changes. A replacement from a different generation may read it, may read it partially, or may not recognise it at all, in which case the disks look to it like unconfigured devices.

Backward compatibility is specific, not general

Newer controllers often read older metadata, which is why this usually works and therefore why it is rarely checked. Whether a particular pair of generations is compatible is a specific fact, documented when both products were current and increasingly hard to establish once neither is sold. Substituting on the assumption that newer implies compatible is reasonable and occasionally wrong.

The destructive option looks like progress

A controller that cannot interpret the metadata presents the disks as available and offers to build an array from them. Under pressure, with a system down, that reads like the path forward. It writes new metadata over the existing description and the original array ceases to exist. The disks were never damaged at any point in this sequence, including after.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Ghana

Smart Array controllers matched to the metadata generation of the array they are inheriting, the cache and energy modules that generation expects, drives in the carrier the controller addresses, ProLiant chassis and boards, MSA shelves and canisters, and memory seated to the documented order. Ghana sits on the published West Africa card at 5 to 7 days door-to-door from Cairo. Each item is checked in a live chassis, its serial written to our records, and covered for one to three years.
