FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Optical budget, short runs and the Ghana lane.

Quote five to seven days from Cairo. That is the West Africa card figure on our shipping page with Ghana named on it, and clearance is quoted apart from it so the number stays purely transit.
Strong is the problem. A receiver has a maximum as well as a minimum, and a long-reach module firing down a few metres of fibre can deliver more light than the far end is rated to accept. The receiver saturates and misreads bits. Every diagnostic you would normally run says the optical path is excellent, because the only number people check is whether there is enough light.
It is the natural assumption and it is wrong at the top of the range. Optical budget is a window with two edges. Under-powering a long run is the failure everyone knows about; over-powering a short one produces errors that look like a dirty connector or a failing module, and replacing either changes nothing.
Read the received power at each end and compare it against the maximum in the receiver specification, not just the minimum. If the reading is at or above that ceiling you have found it, and the confirmation takes a minute once you know which end of the range to look at.
Either a module matched to the actual distance, which is the tidy answer, or an attenuator to bring the level back inside range where the module cannot be changed. We supply both, and pick optics against the run length you give us rather than against the longest distance the part could cover.

Cisco Support in Ghana After End of Life

A link a few metres long, throwing errors, with optics reporting healthy strong light at both ends. Every instinct says the optical path is fine and the problem must be elsewhere. The light level is exactly the problem, and it is too high rather than too low.

A Receiver Has a Ceiling as Well as a Floor

Optical budget is a range. Below the minimum the receiver cannot distinguish the signal; above the maximum it saturates and misreads. A long-reach module is built to push enough power to survive kilometres of fibre. Point it down a patch lead between two racks and almost none of that power is lost, so the far end receives far more than it is specified to handle.

Every routine check confirms the wrong conclusion

The habitual question about an optical link is whether there is sufficient light, and here there is abundantly. Diagnostics report healthy transmit and healthy receive. Nothing flags a level as too high unless somebody compares it to the ceiling in the specification, which is not where attention goes. The link reads as optically perfect and keeps corrupting frames.

The usual suspects absorb the blame

Errors with good light point at contamination or a failing module, so connectors are cleaned and optics are swapped. A replacement long-reach module behaves identically, which suggests a bad batch or a failing port. Meanwhile the mismatch between module class and run length sits unexamined, because it was decided at installation by whoever had a module available.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in Ghana

Optics matched to the run length being lit rather than to the longest distance the part could serve, attenuators and assemblies to bring a hot link back inside receiver range, Nexus and Catalyst switching, supervisors and cards at the level the chassis runs, UCS server and fabric components, and supplies chosen for the chassis cooling. Our published West Africa band puts Ghana at 5 to 7 days door-to-door from Cairo. All modules are proven in the port class they will serve, serial-noted, and covered one to three years.
