FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

IBM tape library and media generation questions for operators in Italy.

Three to five days door-to-door from Cairo. Italy is one of the countries named in the European band on our published shipping page, so that is a band you can verify rather than a promise you have to take on trust.
Test that assumption before discarding tapes. A drive generation only reads and writes specific media generations, and the library will happily load a cartridge the drive cannot use. The load succeeds mechanically and the job fails afterwards, which reads as a media fault when it is a generation mismatch.
Gradually, and usually through good intentions. A failed drive is replaced with a newer generation because that is what was available. Media is bought in bulk to the generation that was current when the library was commissioned. Neither decision is wrong on its own, and together they produce a library that loads cartridges it cannot process.
Yes, and it is the part most often skipped. Within a generation, drive firmware determines which media revisions are handled correctly, and a library running mixed firmware across its drives can succeed on one drive and fail on another with the same cartridge. That intermittency is why these faults get attributed to individual tapes.
Tape drives by generation, library robotics and frame assemblies, cleaning and media handling components, and the Power and System x hardware around the library, on the 3 to 5 day European lane. Every unit is serial-identified and tested before dispatch, with one to three years of warranty.

A Cartridge That Loads Is Not a Cartridge That Works

Tape remains in service across Italian institutions long after the servers around it have been refreshed, and the most common fault we are asked about is not mechanical. A cartridge is loaded, the library reports it mounted, and the backup job then fails. The natural conclusion is bad media, and boxes of perfectly serviceable tapes are written off on that basis. The actual cause is frequently that the drive generation and the media generation no longer match.

The Mismatch Arrives One Reasonable Decision at a Time

A drive fails and is replaced with whatever generation is currently available, which is newer than the library was built around. Media continues to be purchased to the generation that was standard when the library was commissioned, because that is what the runbook says. Each decision is defensible in isolation. Together they produce a library whose robotics will cheerfully present cartridges to a drive that cannot read or write them.

Firmware makes it intermittent

Within a single generation, drive firmware governs which media revisions are handled correctly. A library with drives at different firmware levels can succeed with a cartridge on one drive and fail with the same cartridge on another. That intermittency is precisely what makes the fault look like media quality: it is not reproducible, it follows no obvious pattern, and it goes away when the job happens to be assigned to a compatible drive.

What to establish before replacing anything

Record the generation of every drive in the library, the firmware level of each, and the generation of the media in rotation. The mismatches are usually visible immediately once those three lists exist side by side. This is a documentation exercise rather than an engineering one, and it is considerably cheaper than replacing media that was never faulty.

What ICD Supplies for IBM Estates in Italy

Tape drives by generation and firmware level, library robotics, frame assemblies and cartridge handling components, alongside the Power and System x hardware the library attaches to, with ServeRAID adapters and the battery or capacitor hardware they depend on. Italy is inside the published European band, so parts move on a 3 to 5 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each item ships against its own recorded serial after testing, warranted one to three years.
