FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell array recovery and controller questions for operators in Italy.

Italy sits in the European band on our published shipping page, which is 3 to 5 days door-to-door from Cairo. That is the figure we work to for an Italian address, and it is the same figure you can read on the shipping page rather than one quoted privately.
Usually not. Drives written by a Dell controller carry the array configuration in metadata on the disks themselves. A new controller sees that as a foreign configuration, and until it is imported the controller does not present the array. The data is intact and unreachable, which is a different problem from data loss.
Yes, and the order of operations is what matters. The foreign configuration is imported rather than cleared, and clearing it is the irreversible action that turns a recoverable situation into a real one. Any engineer who has not done this on Dell hardware before is one menu selection away from the wrong outcome.
It has to be able to read what the original wrote. A controller from a different generation may not import a configuration created by an older one, and cache configuration differs between models in ways that change whether the import is offered at all. This is why we quote the controller against the service tag rather than against the model name.
PERC controllers matched to the generation that created the array, cache hardware for those controllers, Dell EMC components, and the drives and carriers around them, delivered inside the 3 to 5 day European band. Every unit is serial-recorded and tested before it ships, with one to three years of warranty.

The Array Configuration Lives on the Disks, Not the Card

A Dell RAID controller does not hold your array definition on its own. It writes that definition into metadata on the member drives, which is the design that makes recovery possible at all. When a controller is replaced, the new card reads that metadata and recognises it as a configuration created elsewhere. Until an operator tells it to adopt that configuration, the card presents nothing, and an Italian operator looking at an empty array on a machine that was working an hour ago reasonably concludes the worst.

Two Menu Options, One of Them Irreversible

The controller offers to import the foreign configuration or to clear it. Import adopts what the drives already describe and the array returns. Clear discards the metadata and the array definition is genuinely gone, leaving intact disks with no description of how they relate to each other. Both options are presented with equal weight at the same prompt, and the wrong one is chosen by engineers who are competent but have not worked on Dell RAID before.

Why the replacement card has to be chosen carefully

The new controller must be able to read what the old one wrote. Metadata written by an older generation is not always importable by a much newer card, and cache configuration differs between models in ways that affect whether the import path is offered. A controller that is nominally an upgrade can therefore be the wrong part for a recovery, which is why we quote against the service tag and the existing controller rather than against a description of the machine.

The sequence worth writing down before you need it

Record which physical slot each drive occupies before removing anything, fit the replacement controller, import rather than clear, and verify the array reports its original geometry before allowing a rebuild to start. None of this is exotic, but all of it is easier to establish in advance than during an outage with a production system down and an audience.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in Italy

PERC controllers matched to the generation that created the array rather than to the newest available, cache modules and their power hardware, Dell EMC PowerVault and Unity components, and SAS and NVMe drives with the carrier generation the chassis expects. Italy is in the published European band, so parts move on a 3 to 5 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Every unit is identified by its own serial and tested before dispatch, with that serial recorded against the order and one to three years of warranty.
