FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Spare eligibility, arrays and the Uganda lane.

On a band. Our East Africa card names Uganda at four to six days door-to-door from Cairo, so it is a standing published figure rather than a per-shipment estimate. Clearance is quoted separately from it.
Check whether that spare is dedicated or global. A dedicated spare is assigned to specific arrays and will not rebuild into one it was not assigned to. The enclosure genuinely contains an unused, healthy spare, and it is simply not eligible for the array that failed. The protection exists; it does not apply where it was assumed to.
Because the assignment is a property of the array, not of the shelf. A spare added when the first array was built is often bound to that array, and arrays created later have no spare at all. Physical proximity implies nothing about eligibility, and the enclosure view shows a spare present, which is the reassuring part.
Usually yes, and that is often the fastest recovery. What matters is doing it knowingly rather than discovering it during an incident, because a degraded array with no eligible spare is running with no margin at all while somebody reads documentation.
Array by array rather than shelf by shelf. List each array and the spares eligible for it, and you will typically find coverage is uneven across an estate built in stages. We supply drives sized and typed for the specific array they are meant to protect, so a new spare is eligible rather than merely present.

HPE Support in Uganda After End of Life

There is a particular disappointment in watching an array go degraded while an unused hot spare sits healthy in the same enclosure. Nothing has failed except an assumption: that a spare in the shelf is a spare for everything in the shelf. Eligibility is decided per array, and on an estate assembled in stages it is rarely uniform.

A Spare Is Assigned, Not Merely Installed

Controllers distinguish between a spare bound to particular arrays and one available to any array that can use it. A dedicated spare will not rebuild into an array it was not assigned to, however healthy it is and however close it sits. The enclosure inventory reports a spare present and idle, which reads as protection, and the controller is correct to leave it alone.

Coverage becomes uneven as the estate grows

The first array is built carefully, with a spare assigned to it. Later arrays are added for new workloads, often under time pressure, and the spare question is either deferred or assumed to be inherited. Years on, the shelf holds several arrays and one spare that protects the oldest of them. Nobody decided that; it accumulated.

The discovery happens at the worst moment

This is only ever found during a failure, because that is the only time eligibility is tested. The array is already degraded, the clock is already running, and the team is reading controller documentation to establish whether the spare they can see is a spare they can use. On out-of-support hardware, where rebuild windows on large drives are long and a second failure is a real prospect, that lost time is the expensive part.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Uganda

Drives sized and typed for the array they are intended to protect and shipped in the caddy the enclosure addresses, Smart Array controllers holding the configuration the shelf expects, MSA enclosures and canisters, ProLiant chassis and boards, memory placed to the documented population order, and supplies rated alongside their partner. For a Ugandan consignee the published East Africa lane applies: 4 to 6 days door to door from Cairo. Everything is load-tested before dispatch, serialised, and warranted between one and three years.
