FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Optical paths, orientation and the Uganda lane.

Four to six, door-to-door from Cairo, taken from the East Africa card on our shipping page which names Uganda. Clearance is quoted separately so that figure stays purely transit.
That combination points at the path rather than the parts. A fibre pair carries one direction on each strand, so it has to be crossed between the two ends: transmit at one end must land on receive at the other. Patch a run straight through where it should cross, or cross it twice across two patch panels, and both ends transmit perfectly into each other transmit ports. Every module is healthy and no light is received.
The diagnostics are what mislead. Good transmit and absent receive at both ends is also the signature of a broken fibre, and a break is far more common, so that is the conclusion drawn. Replacing optics changes nothing, which usually escalates to replacing the patch lead, then suspecting the port.
Because it is introduced at a panel rather than at the equipment. A run that crosses two or three patch fields can be corrected an even number of times and arrive straight. Each individual patch looks right. The error is a property of the whole path, and nobody owns the whole path, particularly in a building where cabling was installed by someone no longer involved.
Read the receive level at both ends and compare against the transmit level reported opposite. Light leaving one end and arriving nowhere, with the far end reporting the same, is orientation rather than breakage. We supply optics whose reported levels can be read and compared, and assemblies with a known orientation so a replacement does not add a second unknown.

Cisco Support in Uganda After End of Life

Two optics, both reporting healthy transmit power, neither reporting any received light, and a link that stays down through two module replacements. Every component tests good. The fault is not in any of them: it is in the relationship between the two ends of the fibre, which is the one thing none of the diagnostics can see.

A Fibre Pair Must Cross, Exactly Once

Each strand of a duplex pair carries one direction. For a link to work, what one end transmits must arrive at what the other end receives, which means the pair has to be crossed somewhere between them. Cross it zero times, or twice, and both devices transmit into each other transmit ports. Both report themselves as working, because from each device position it is: it is sending light correctly and receiving none.

It looks exactly like a broken fibre

Good transmit with no receive at both ends is also what a severed run produces, and a damaged fibre is the more common event by a wide margin. So the reasonable diagnosis is a break, and the reasonable action is to replace the patch lead and then the optics. Each step returns the same result, and the conclusion drifts toward a bad port, which is the last thing anybody wants to replace.

The error belongs to the path, not to any one patch

Nobody wires a single patch lead backwards and fails to notice. What happens is that a run traverses several patch fields, and the crossing is applied an even number of times across them. Every individual connection is correct by its own labelling. Only the end-to-end orientation is wrong, and on estates where the cabling predates the current team and the documentation, the end-to-end view is the one nobody holds.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in Uganda

Optics whose reported transmit and receive levels can be read and compared end to end, patch and trunk assemblies with a known orientation, Catalyst and Nexus switching, supervisors and line cards at the level the chassis runs, UCS server and fabric components, and supplies matched to the chassis airflow. Uganda falls under our East Africa card, which sets 4 to 6 days door-to-door out of Cairo. All modules are tested in the role they will fill, serial-recorded, and covered one to three years.
