FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Power budgets, redundancy and the Uganda lane.

Plan on four to six days from Cairo, door to door. Uganda is named on the East Africa card on our shipping page and Kampala is served on that lane. Customs clearance sits outside the figure and is quoted on its own.
Compare the wattage stamped on the two supplies. A redundant pair operates to the capability of the smaller unit, because the chassis must survive losing either one. Fit a lower-wattage supply beside a higher one and the usable budget quietly becomes the lower figure. Everything runs until you add a component that needs the headroom the label promised, and then the system declines to start.
Because nothing is faulty. Each unit is working correctly at its own rating, and redundancy is genuinely present. The chassis is doing the conservative and correct thing by sizing itself to what remains if one fails. It is a configuration outcome rather than a fault, so there is no alert to raise.
A supply fails, the nearest available replacement is fitted, and it works. On an estate past its support date the exact wattage is often not in stock locally and a close substitute keeps the machine up, which is the right call at the time. The consequence only appears at the next upgrade, possibly years later and to a different team.
The rating of every installed supply, not just the chassis specification. Two identical-looking servers can have different usable budgets. It is readable from the management controller without opening anything, and it is the difference between an upgrade that proceeds and a maintenance window spent diagnosing a refusal to boot.

Dell Support in Uganda After End of Life

A server that has run without complaint for years and then refuses to power on after a processor is added looks like a fault introduced by the upgrade. Often the upgrade only revealed something installed long before: a redundant power pair whose two halves are not rated the same, and a chassis that has therefore been running on the smaller of the two figures all along.

Redundancy Is Sized to What Survives, Not to What Is Present

A pair of supplies exists so the chassis keeps running when one is lost. That promise only holds if the remaining unit can carry the whole load, so the usable budget is the capability of the smaller supply, not the sum of the two and not the larger. Put a lower-rated unit beside a higher-rated one and the machine has quietly become a lower-capacity machine, with full redundancy and reduced headroom.

Nothing is wrong, so nothing is reported

Both supplies are healthy. Each is operating inside its own rating. Redundancy is real and would work. There is no fault condition to alarm on, and the management controller is not in a position to know that somebody intends to add a component next quarter. The system is behaving correctly and conservatively, which is precisely why the situation persists unnoticed.

The substitution was the right decision at the time

These pairs become mismatched during ordinary repair. A supply fails, the exact rating is not available locally, and a close alternative restores redundancy the same day. On hardware past its support date that is good judgement, not carelessness. What is missing is the note that the machine now has less headroom than its specification implies, and the person who made the call is rarely the person who plans the upgrade years later.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in Uganda

Power supplies matched on wattage to the unit already installed beside them, PowerEdge chassis and system boards, processors and the heatsinks rated for them, PERC controllers with the cache their revision expects, drives in the carrier the backplane addresses, and registered memory placed to the documented order. Uganda appears on the East Africa card we publish, at 4 to 6 days from Cairo to the door. Each part is run up on the bench, its serial entered on our records, and covered for one to three years.
