Every day-to-day behaviour is indistinguishable, which is why the distinction is almost never known in advance. It surfaces once, during a chassis failure, under pressure.

Repeated attempts are what turn this into data loss

The natural response is to try the disks in another machine, and then another, perhaps in a different controller. Each attempt risks a foreign controller writing its own metadata, and that is how a situation that was recoverable by rebuilding the original software environment becomes one that is not. The right first move is to stop moving the disks.
