FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE array expansion and capacity questions for operators in Pakistan.

Express courier from our Cairo warehouse, with the door-to-door window confirmed for each consignment. Pakistan does not appear on our published shipping bands, so we establish the route rather than quoting a standing number.
It is almost certainly sitting between two steps. Adding physical drives grows the array, but the logical volume on top of that array does not grow with it, and the filesystem above that does not grow with the volume. Three layers, three separate operations, and each has to be performed in turn.
Extending the logical volume. The array expansion is visible in the controller tooling and feels like the job, and the filesystem extension is a familiar operating system task. The middle step belongs to neither team clearly, so it is the one that gets left, and the capacity sits in the array unclaimed.
Expansion operations are online and non-destructive on these controllers, but they are also long-running and they leave the array working harder while they proceed. The sensible approach is to complete the sequence deliberately rather than discovering months later that the capacity was never claimed.
Array drives with genuine carriers so an added disk reports properly, Smart Array controllers with the cache their generation expects, and the chassis parts around them. Delivery is by express courier from Cairo, confirmed per consignment. Each part is bench-proven, tagged to its serial, and backed one to three years.

Three Layers, Three Separate Operations

Capacity on a Smart Array system is stacked. Physical drives make up an array; a logical volume is carved from that array; a filesystem sits on the volume. Adding drives grows only the bottom layer. The volume does not grow with the array, and the filesystem does not grow with the volume. Each is a deliberate operation, and skipping any one of them leaves capacity that has been bought, installed and correctly recognised, and cannot be used.

The Step Nobody Owns

The first step is visible in the controller utility and feels like the job: the disks appear, the array grows, the work looks done. The last step is a familiar operating system task that a systems administrator will perform without prompting. The middle step — extending the logical volume — sits between the storage tooling and the operating system, and on a team where those are different people it is the one that falls through.

What the server reports meanwhile

Exactly the capacity it had before. The controller reports a larger array, which is true; the operating system reports the original volume size, which is also true. Both are correct and they disagree, and for a Pakistani operator who has just paid for drives and installed them over a maintenance window, that disagreement reads as something having gone wrong with the hardware.

Do it as one planned sequence

Expand the array, extend the logical volume, grow the filesystem, and verify the reported free space at the end rather than at the middle. The expansion is online and non-destructive on these controllers but it is long-running, so it is worth starting it with the whole sequence already planned rather than treating each layer as a separate discovery.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Pakistan

Array drives with genuine carriers so an added disk reports through the controller properly, Smart Array controllers with the cache their generation was designed around, ProLiant chassis components, ECC memory completing a bank from a single supplier where possible, and hot-swap supplies for chassis the authorised channel has dropped. Parts leave Cairo by express courier and the arrival window is agreed for each shipment. Each part is bench-proven, tagged to its serial, and backed one to three years.
