The Machine Normally Hands the Installer Its Own Drivers
A PowerEdge carries an embedded management controller that, among other things, holds a pack of drivers and offers them to an operating system installer. This is why rebuilding a Dell server usually proceeds without anybody thinking about storage drivers at all. The mechanism is invisible precisely because it works, which is what makes its absence so disorienting.
An Installer That Reports No Disks
When that source is empty, the installer encounters a storage controller it has no driver for and reports that there are no disks. Every disk is present, healthy and spinning. The array is intact. What is missing is the software that lets the installation see any of it, and the message on screen points squarely at the storage.
Three ways an estate arrives here
The pack can be erased during a firmware recovery procedure. It leaves with a replaced system board, since it lives in the embedded controller on that board. And on a machine old enough, the pack simply predates the operating system being installed and contains nothing relevant to it. All three are more likely on hardware past its support date, which is the hardware most likely to be rebuilt rather than replaced.
The timing is the whole problem
This is discovered at the worst moment: the server is down, the rebuild is underway, and the missing item is a driver that has to be located, matched to the exact controller and operating system version, and brought to a machine with no network installed. For a Pakistani site working to a restore deadline, that lookup is the difference between a two-hour rebuild and a much longer night.
