FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell airflow, cooling and containment questions for operators in the Netherlands.

Three to five days, door-to-door from Cairo. The Netherlands is one of the five countries named on the European card of our published shipping page, so that is the band we work to for a Dutch consignee.
Check the airflow direction of the part. Fans and power supplies are built in two orientations, conventionally front-to-back and reversed, and a unit of the wrong orientation moves air against the aisle it sits in. The machine cools itself and fights every other machine in the row while doing it.
Because hot and cold aisle containment works by keeping the two air masses separate. A single chassis exhausting into the cold aisle raises the inlet temperature for everything downstream of it. Every other machine responds by increasing fan speed, so the cost is spread across the row rather than landing on the server that caused it.
Rarely. The modules are the same size, use the same connector and seat the same way, and the orientation is recorded in the part number rather than stamped on the housing in a way anyone reads during a night-time swap. That is precisely why it gets fitted.
We ask which direction the rack is built for and quote the matching part number, rather than shipping whichever variant is quickest to source. The Netherlands is on the 3 to 5 day European lane; every unit is tested and recorded to its serial, with one to three years of warranty.

Two Parts, Same Shape, Opposite Direction

Server fans and power supplies are manufactured in two airflow orientations. The common one draws cool air from the front of the rack and exhausts it at the rear; the reversed variant does the opposite, for equipment installed the other way round. The modules are physically interchangeable — same dimensions, same connector, same latch — and the difference lives in the part number rather than in anything visible at two in the morning.

The Cost Lands on Everyone Except the Machine That Caused It

Dutch facilities are frequently well built, with proper hot and cold aisle containment, and containment is exactly what makes this expensive. The principle is that the two air masses stay separate. One chassis exhausting into the cold aisle contaminates the supply for every machine downstream of it, and each of those machines responds correctly by raising its fan speed. The server with the wrong part may look perfectly healthy while the row around it works harder.

Why it survives inspection

Nothing about the installed unit looks wrong. It seated, it powered up, the machine is cooling, and no alarm attributes anything to it. The evidence is thermal and it is distributed — a gradient along the row, inlet temperatures that have crept up, fan baselines higher than they used to be — which is the kind of evidence that gets noticed weeks later and attributed to the room rather than to a part.

Specify the direction, not just the component

Record which orientation your racks are built for, and include it when a part is ordered. It is one field and it removes the failure entirely. For an estate past its support date, where parts increasingly come from stock rather than from a configured order, it is the difference between a spare that helps and one that quietly costs the row.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in the Netherlands

Fan modules and power supplies in the airflow orientation your rack requires rather than whichever variant is closest to hand, PERC controllers with the cache their generation was built around, drives in the carrier revision the backplane accepts, and ECC memory for PowerEdge families the channel has stopped listing. We ask which direction the rack is built for before quoting. The Netherlands is named on the published European card, so parts move on a 3 to 5 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Every unit is checked, stamped to its own serial in our records, and warranted one to three years.
